Hiking Recommendations

Special routes at the Wilden Kaiser

Hiking is a total affair of the heart here at our Landhof! We are more than happy to help with tour tips and useful information for the whole family. Here are three particular favourites – breathtakingly beautiful walks.

Gaudeamus hut

The Gaudeamus Hut at 1,263m altitude is the most easily accessible Alpine club hut in the Kaisergebirge Mountains. The hut is located on the southern side of the Wilder Kaiser, offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountain peaks and valley.

Start: Wochenbrunner Alm car park
Level of difficulty: easy
Duration: approx. 45 mins
Length: 1,3 km
Altitude difference: 200 m

Route
By car, you take the toll road (€4 per car) to get you to the car park at the Wochenbrunner Alm lying at 1085m. From here, the ascent takes around 45 minutes, straight ahead towards the Wilder Kaiser and “Gaudeamushütte”. The “Gaunerschlupf” is a great place for children to play while overlooked from the sun terrace; there is also a wildlife enclosure with roe deer, goats and stags.

“Bergdoktor“ (Mountain Doctor) Circuit

On the „Bergdoktor“ walk it is possible to visit many of the original film locations of the ever-popular TV show.

Start: Ellmau Information Offices

Level of difficulty: easy
Duration: approx. 3.5 hours
Lenght: 11.6 km
Altitude difference: 852 m

Route
This gentle circular walk starts in Ellmau, initially taking you across the village square to the inn at Going which is used for filming. Continue on to hiking trail no.8 to Blattlbrücke Bridge where an underpass guides you in the direction of Wochenbrunn, taking you past Hausbach Farm before turning left and heading back towards Ellmau.
Follow the circuit around the district of Wald, the path continues towards Scheffau in the direction of Auwald. Here, awaiting your stop is the Föhrenhof: used as the location for the interior of the “Gasthof Wilder Kaiser” inn during filming.  Now follow the trail marked ”Bergdoktorrunde“ (Mountain Doctor circuit) through the district of Auwinkl.
Another key filming location can be seen on the way back: the “Bergdoktor” surgery! After inspecting the doctor’s surgery, the hike heads back to the starting point in the village of Ellmau

11er-Kaiser Circuit

A bit longer, but still an easy hike and few people:

Start: Ellmau Information Offices
Level of difficulty: easy
Duration: approx. 7.5 hours
Length: 22.7 km
Altitude difference: 1,580 m
Important: sturdy footwear is essential

Route

From Ellmau Information Offices, take hiking trail no.8 via Marienkapelle (St Mary’s Chapel) to the Hausberg Mountain. Please note: the Brenner Alm mountain hut offers the last chance for refreshments for the next few hours! Then continue on hiking trail no.11, which takes you past the Höhenangeralm, Botenalm and Schwendteralm alpine pastures.

Alongside streams, through forests and across meadows to Eibergalm. From here, take the panoramic trail to the Hartkaiser gondola lift summit station. Here you can stop for a bite to eat at the Bergkaiser restaurant.

Then on to hiking trail no.2 to Ranhartalm, next take trail no.7 through a beautiful spruce forest to the Hartkaiser gondola lift station and back to the village.

„We know and love this area – we will be happy to help you in planning the perfect mountain tour.”
